An ongoing family debate was finally resolved this week: duct tape does not in fact solve every problem. After several frustrating months of illness, Larry Curtis passed from us on January 21, 2016. Larry is remembered by his wife, Pam Rennie Curtis, his children and their spouses, Lexa and Jim and Chad and Jennifer, his grandchildren Clara, Adeline, Spencer, and Lauren, his brother and sister-in-law, Dan and Connie Curtis, and his father Raymond, as well as countless friends, colleagues, clients, and students. Larry was a dedicated public servant, beginning with his service to our country in Vietnam, for which he earned a Bronze Star, and continuing with many years' service to the City of Ames. His devotion to service took other forms as well, leading to 41 years shaping the minds of business students at Iowa State University and using his extraordinary mind to help his clients as an attorney. As those who knew him are aware, though, his true passions were family, cooking, Iowa State athletics, and last but surely not least, golf. Larry was happiest, when he was able to combine those things he loved most: tailgating with family and friends in the backyard before ISU football games, coaching his children's little league and softball teams, experiencing new places and tastes while traveling, and racking up his 10 hole in ones. His impact on the City of Ames and the ISU community will, hopefully, be long felt. His influence on his family and friends will, without question, be missed, but will be fondly and frequently recalled.

Memorial services will be held at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, with Visitation on Sunday, January 24th from 2-5 pm and a celebration of life service on Monday, January 25th at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established at First National Bank of Ames and will be used to establish remembrances at Iowa State University and Ames Golf and Country Club.

I hope Mr. Curtis now how important he was to many of his students. I took all of his classes when I was at ISU, including a new-at-the-time Business Law Class. He is the main reason that I became an attorney and a CPA.

Pam and Family: Barbara and I are thinking of you. I had many good years with Larry on the council and I miss him. He was always a straight shooter both in civc life and on the golf course. We once played 18 holes at the Ames Club at 6:00 in the morning in under 2 hours...laughing all the way. That's how I'll remember him. God Bless you.

In the Early eighties I served as City Manager under the City Council with Larry. He was an outstanding Council member and a true leader. He will be missed

CandleAmong his many qualities, Larry was a community leader, a highly-regarded member of the bar, jovial, welcoming and quick-witted. He was a colleague and friend to many, and a mentor to me. I am thankful I had the pleasure to practice law with him, however, I was hoping for ten more years as he mentioned around the office a few times. He will be sorely missed.

CandleMr. Curtis was a special, and one of my favorite, professors at Iowa State University. I took both of the Business Law courses he taught in the early 1970's. He taught these classes using the Socratic method with a lot of student participation in the discussion. He learned my name early on which resulted in me often being called upon to review a case or a point of law in class. That not only served me to be more prepared for class but also to get a better grade on his exams which were notoriously tough. Not sure I ever thanked him enough for what I learned. He was a very nice man. Rest in peace.

Larry was a great mentor in my legal career, and I and my family always felt welcome in his house. He was a rare combination of humor and intellect, and always had an insightful (or perhaps as often, wry) comment following an Iowa State game. The Hayes family will greatly miss his friendship, repartee and immense hospitality.

It is with a sad heart that I must say farewell to a dear long time friend. We golfed together, tail gated together, golf vacationed together, Las Vegas trips together, card games together and many chats together.

CandleLarry and I grew up only a few miles apart in SE Iowa. However, I became acquainted with him by seeking advice on legal matters. I enjoyed my interactions with him and will miss him. Best Wishes to Larry's family.

It was my honor to know and work with Larry during the years I lived in Story City. We officiated basketball and football games together and he also provided me with professional services. A great guy, a talented man.
