Robert "Bob" Hein, age 78, died of pancreatic cancer on June 2, 2018, at Green Hills health center in Ames, Iowa.

Bob was born August 27, 1939, a son of Edwin and Clarice Hein. He was raised on the farm and walked to a one-room country school before attending Osage High School, graduating in 1957. Wrestling was his passion, and it was at Iowa State University where he realized his calling to coach and teach. Graduating in 1961, he started his career in Postville, Iowa. He married Ann Boardman on June 11, 1966, in Wheaton, IL. Bob continued his career at Dewitt and Davenport West high schools in education and athletics.

In 1978 Bob and Ann moved to Illinois where their family put down roots. The fulfillment of his career came at West Chicago Community High School where he coached wrestling, taught health, P.E., and retired as a guidance counselor in 2002.

After 30 years in Illinois, Bob brought Ann back to Iowa where they energetically embraced life in Ames. Bob enjoyed leadership roles at church, Green Hills retirement community, and Sons of Norway. He loved spending his time singing in choirs, going to wrestling tournaments, ISU athetic events, and travelling with his family.

Bob is survived by his wife, Ann, his daughter, Robin (Tim) Caldwell and grandchildren Baillie and Claire of North Aurora, IL, son Bill (Irina) Hein and grandchild Simmy of Washington, D.C., brother Russell (Gloria) Hein, sister Carol (Gordon) Dill and sister-in-law Janis Hein.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Allan Hein.

Bob was one of the best teachers in our West Chicago High School that I have ever seen. His students talked about him with much affection and kindness. I personally am proud to have him as a friend and colleague. Many times he gave me the support I needed and for that I am truly grateful!

My deepest condolences to the Hein Family. Mr. Hein was a LEGEND. So many of us look back fondly on our days in high school, and Mr. Hein played a role in so many of our lives, even if just as a friendly face in the halls for those who didn't have him as a teacher, or coach. Please know that he will be missed.

school districts long and well remembered history.

I have so many wonderful and special memories of that great guy, Bob Hein. Just one of the many, many philanthropic activities of Bob was teaching immigrants to drive! Bob never thought of himself but what he could do to help another. One day Bob came to work with a black eye and facial cuts. I said, oh dear-what happened? Bob said he was giving a driving lesson and yelled for the driver to slow down, he sped up! Next Bob yelled STOP but the crash occurred. Then Bob laughed and said, “I forgot he didn’t speak English!” Typical Bob reaction. I loved Bob dearly. 😢

It’s significant when you not only have fond memories of your former campus ministry students... but also of the parents of those students! Bob and Ann were frequent worshippers at ULC and such a supportive presence. Bob lived out his sense of vocation in many ways. Blessed be his memory.
