On June 11th William (Bill) Allan Nelson, 77, lost his battle with cancer at home surrounded by his loving family. Bill was a lifetime resident in the Ames area. A celebration of life open to all will be held at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care 414 Lincoln Way in Ames, Iowa from 2:00 - 4:00 pm on June 15, 2018. All are welcome to come and share memories of the life of Bill.
He was born April 22, 1941 to Arthur and Doris (Short) Nelson in Ames, Iowa. Bill was the third oldest of four children. He graduated from Ames Senior High School in 1959. He worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation designing highways and interstates for over 40 years.
He married his true love, Sharon K. (Doubleday) Nelson in 1960. He is survived by his beloved wife and two children. The oldest, Scott Nelson married to Mi Suk with children Kenny and Tonya. His beloved daughter Shari Timms married to Dana with children Justin and Jessica. He is also survived by his sister Frances Roberg of Johnston, Iowa and three grandchildren Beau, Ann Marie, and Richard.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his two sisters Donna Buhman and Suzanne Miller; and one grandson William Nelson
Bill loved to spend time with his three great grandchildren, fishing, caring for his horses, cats and his inseparable dog Dakota.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Alzheimer's Association or the American Cancer Society.

Dear Sharon, Scott, Mi Suk, Shari and Dana, Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren, We are so sorry we can not join you to celebrate the life of a very special person. When we think of Bill we think of his smile and his thoughtfulness of those around him. He was always a nice guy. He was so good with children and they loved him.
