I only knew Bill in the last 5 years of his life, when we moved into a home catty-corner to Bill and Millie. I saw him often, as our dog needed walking and Bill took several walks a day (in robust health in his late 80's), leading to some pleasant walks together to Emma McCarthy Lee Park. Bill loved telling me stories about his younger, rowdier days, how he and Millie met and married, how our street and Ames had changed during his lifetime, and his time at Alliant Energy. While he had trouble remembering our names, he loved seeing my dog and I, and always remembered her as "the dirt-eating dog"!

When you two came to our house & met my husband, he was astounded by the sharpness of your memories. I was tickled to note that you could also complete each others' sentences. Truly you were two peas in a pod! I'm so sad to think of you alone now, Millie. My love to you, & condolences to the family. His rich humor (& tall tales of Petey the Great) will be missed.

I use to hide when I was at my grandparents as a little girl when Uncle Bill and Aunt Millie would visit.
He would pinch my cheeks so hard.
Then he'd give me a hug

Bill and Millie were very special friends of our family. We spent quite a bit of time with them growing up. I loved listening to all the funny fishing stories he would tell. Bill will be dearly missed. Prayers for Millie and all the family.
