Duane Gail Caskey of Ames Iowa, formerly of Redfield Iowa.

Due to Federal and State guidelines of Covid-19 the family is choosing to do a graveside at later date.

It is with great sorrow that we share the news of the sudden passing of our beloved Duane, on April 9th, 2020, at the age of 83.
Duane was born on April 8th, 1937. He lived on a farm outside Indianola through his high school years. He served in the Army Reserves. In 1958, he married Virla Sheldon, and they had two daughters. He started his career in the lumber business as a carpenter. In 1974 they moved to Redfield to open a lumber yard. Duane was very active in the community, serving at various times as fireman, city councilman, Lion's Club member, volunteer at the legion breakfast, and member of Redfield Development. He enjoyed spending time with family, playing cribbage, having coffee with friends, telling stories and jokes, and being ornery. He never met a stranger.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents, brother Gerald Caskey, sister Ardith Larson, and three infant siblings.
He is survived by his wife Virla, sister Marie Theobald, and brother David (Carolyn), Caskey, his daughter Diane (Kim) Combes, with children Nicole (Kelsey) Tengan, Matt Combes, Jose Combes, Destiney Combes, Jordan Combes, Logan Combes; and his daughter Carol (David) Putz with children Erin (Jared) Beckham, Makenzie Putz, and Molly Putz. Also survived by six great-grandchildren Justin, Oliver, James, Elijah, Silas, and Camila and numerous nieces, and nephews.

Duane was such a great guy to work with at church. Kind and funny! His passing will leave an empty chair that will be hard to fill.

Duane was the kindest man. Back in 1983/74 my child needed glasses. I humbly ask if the Lions could help with them. I felt so bad for asking. He did not make me feel looked down upon - the Lions came through with the money. She was able to see the blackboard from the back of the glass. God bless him. I remember the tears rolling down my face - he said someday when I was back on my feet - do it for someone else. I have and did. What a blessing
Prayers for you and your family

Virla and family,
Chuck and I are so sad to hear, yet grateful, that Duane went Home. I so enjoyed visiting with him, and Chuck said he will never forget all the hard work he did all the time...

My family knew Duane from Legion breakfast, where we saw his sense of mischief and humor. Later, when we went through a hard time, we also felt his genuine care and sympathy. We won’t forget his kindness to us, and we’ll try to follow his example.

We were so saddened to hear that Duane passed away. They were our wonderful neighbors for 30 years.
I will never forget the prank Duane pulled on a robin one spring. He put a mirror on the inside of his garage window. The robin spotted that other bird as he stood on the outside window ledge. That bird strutted back and forth trying to impress the other robin on the inside of that glass. Eventually the poor robin had to give up and find a new mate.
We will always miss Duane.
We send our best to Virla and the family.

To Virla and all of Duane and Virla’s dear family, We are thinking of you all and know that you are treasuring memories of Duane.
Duane was a special friend to us and so many others who were blessed by the help, love, and prayers he and Virla so generously have given to and offered for others. Many church and community projects have been accomplished with the help of their leadership, expertise, guidance, and hard work.
Duane had a great and unique sense of humor. Just when you thought he was sharing a true story, the story would take an unexpected turn, and you’d be laughing at one of Duane’s jokes, again.
We are praying that the Lord will be with you and comfort you as you visualize your dear Duane in heaven (where we’re hoping our well-loved dog Max is greeting him and telling him that he’s sorry he mistook Duane for an intruder at our back door and “accidentally” bit his leg — even though Duane and Doug joked that Max would definitely not be in heaven :)
Thinking of you all with His love and prayers,
Doug and Evie
