She worked as a Registered Nurse at hospitals in Iowa City, Creston and Ames. In 1967 she helped found the Ames Visiting Nurse Service, which later merged with Mary Greeley Medical Center and became Homeward. She continued her career as a Home Care Nurse for 21 years, retiring in December 1988.

She looked forward to spending time with her four great-grandchildren, Ezra, Zoe, Matilda, and Eli.
She was preceded in death by her husband Donald, her parents, her sister Maxine Hughes, infant brother Marion, son-in-law Larry Lasche, brothers-in-law Harold Hughes, Lou Schulze, and Bernard Shapiro and sisters-in-law Nathalie Shapiro and Mary Ann Schulze.

Carol was a charter member of Northminster Presbyterian Church, where she taught Church school, served on various committees, and served as a Deacon. She was active as a Camp Fire Leader for 10 years, served as assistant Cub Scout Den Mother for 2 years, as a Newsletter Editor for the Lupus Foundation of Iowa of 9 years, and was a 50 year member of Chapter KR, P.E.O. where she served as an officer for 8 years, and historian for 2 years.
She loved traveling, camping and hiking with her husband and family, enjoyed listening to music and was an avid reader. In earlier years she also spent a lot of time sewing and working in her flower gardens. She will be remembered as loving, generous and caring.

Memorial contributions may be made in her honor to Mary Greeley Hospice or Northminster Presbyterian Church, or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Foundation.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this sad time, I understand all to well as I lost my wife 7 months ago to cancer. Don was my first supervisor at the DOT many years ago and he and Carol were always special to me. We all loved Arkansas and my wife and I retired here 20 years ago. We stayed in touch by the annual Christmas newsletters that Carol always so beautifully wrote. We would stop in Ames occasionally during our visits back to Iowa and Don and Carol were always a must short visit. A beautiful family lead by this special lady, God bless and peace for you all.
