Mae Rivard left this world far too early on September 10, 2020. A visitation will be held at 4 - 6:00 p.m. Monday, September 14, 2020 at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care, 414 Lincoln Way Ames, Iowa 50010. Masks and social distancing are required.

Mae was born on November 18, 2008 in Des Moines, Iowa to Drs. Bill Rivard and Alison Barnhill. Mae was artistic in every sense of the word; she loved to paint and draw, and had been playing the piano since she was 5 years old. Her favorite song to play was anything by Queen and was most recently working on "Killer Queen". She was in her fifth year with the Ames Children's Choirs. She adored Harry Potter books and movies. She showered her cats with love everyday spending hours cuddling with them. Mae thoroughly enjoyed her family vacations to Wisconsin with her family and Great Uncle as well as Mexico to visit her grandparents, along the way she would try any new Mexican dish that would be put in front of her as long as it had enough cilantro or hot sauce. In her free time at home she would always keep a strong competitive spirit when it came to board games with her brother, Hugh. She loved to play Roblox with friends, her brother and even Grandma.

Mae sadly leaves behind her parents Bill and Alison, brother Hugh, grandparents Mark and Kathryn Barnhill, and Raymond and Sandra Rivard, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

I am so sorry for you Dr. Rivard and your family and who are now heartbroken for the passing of your lovely daughter Mae. I learned about this sad news from Barnabas. Mae was a little sweet angel and gone too soon. Such a tragic news as this is not easy to process. There is nothing that can truly replace or console you on this tragic loss of your child as I understand your sorrow and grief at this time. Dr. Rivard I cannot be there to visit in person, but my support and sympathies for your family during this difficult time are there. I feel your pain that you are experiencing now. Mae is going to be truly missed, but her good memories when she was still alive are to be cherished forever. I feel like I had known her too now. I am so sorry for her loss and my heartfelt condolences for your family. I know this is a very difficult time for your family and I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers as you grief.

We first met Mae at Whistlestop when we moved to the Ballard area. She and my daughter quickly became friends and were described as "two peas in a Pod" always laughing and playing together. Sleepovers meant they would try on all the clothes in each other's closet and often settling on a princess dress. We will remember Mae as a sweet young lady, fierce competitor and talented musician. Peace and love to her family.

She played Ames u14 Lacrosse for us. She was such a go getter! She was not afraid of the bigger kids she went up against. She was a great teammate to have on our team! Our Lacrosse family is deeply saddened and our prayers go out to you!

Dear Rivard Family,
Mae was in my second grade class at Ballard West. She was gentle, smart, creative, fun loving and lit up our classroom each day with her beautiful smile. Mae was a beautiful girl, inside and out. She was loved by all of her classmates and was a role model even at such a young age. Mae will be truly missed. I will keep your family in my thoughts and prayers.

I was so blessed to be her 5th grade teacher and when you spend every day with a person, you get to know them very well. She was such an incredible and smart young lady with outstanding character. A true role model. She will be so very missed by so many people.

I only knew your daughter in passing as we walk by your house often and have seen her at the park as well over the last four years. We’ve exchanged friendly hellos and smiles and I’ve heard her laughter as her friends as they played in your front yard. Our hearts are with you as you grieve the loss of your daughter.
