Virginia Mae Helland, 91 of Ames Iowa, died at her home on Monday, Dec. 13, 2021. A gathering of friends and family will be 4-6 pm Monday, Dec. 20 at the First United Methodist Church, 516 Kellogg Ave., Ames IA with a "Celebration of Life" funeral service at 6 pm, Monday, Dec. 20 at the church. Burial will take place at Ames Municipal Cemetery, Ames IA.
Virginia was born April 14, 1930 in Fairmont Minnesota, daughter of Eldred and Elizabeth (Hengel) Loop. She graduated from Fairmont High School where she played trombone in the marching band. She married Allan Conroy Helland on May 6, 1951 in Fairmont MN. The couple lived in Blue Earth MN and later in Austin MN before settling in Ames IA in 1962. Virginia worked as a bookkeeper at Bledsoe's mens clothing store and later as a lab tech at NADC (National Animal Disease Center). She was a member of The First United Methodist Church and active in their women's circle, Ames Moose Lodge Women's Auxiliary and American Legion Women's Auxiliary. Allie & Giny were avid golfers at Oaks Golf Course north of Ames and played in numerous tournaments on the circuit. Both enjoyed dancing, cards with friends and family and bowling leagues.
Giny is survived by her 3 children. A son, Brian Helland of Ames; daughters, Karen (Allan) Ratzel of Reedsburg Wisconsin and Shirley (Rodney) Bogenrief of Lafayette Louisiana; grandchildren: Linda, Brenda and Daniel Bogenrief of Lafayette LA, Valerie Mckernan (Mike Koch) of Gilbert IA, Rachael (Corey) Koehler of Toledo IA, Curtis Pierson of Winterset IA and Skyla (Zach) Murrow of Garden Grove IA; 12 great grandchildren: Emma, Boden, Jacob, Jamie, Kaedan, Shayleigh, Evoleht, Noah, Ashlynn, Sawyer, Preston and Witten; her 93 yo sister, Kathryn Thompson of Fairmont MN/Swea City IA; nephews: Scott (Peggy), Russ (Mindy), John (Charlene), Mike & Jamie and niece Laurie (Jim) Forshee all of Fairmont MN/Swea City IA area and numerous nieces and nephews on her late husband Allie's side.
Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Allan.

I met your mother & father when I worked as a pharmacy technician at Hy-Vee. I always enjoyed talking with them when they came to the store. My condolences to you and all of your family.
