Donald L. Heim, age 87 of Ames, IA passed away on February 11, 2023. A memorial service will be held at the Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care, 414 Lincoln Way in Ames on Monday, February 20, 2023, at 10:30am. Visitation will begin at 9:30 am.
Don was born to Lewis and Oral Heim (Heng) on February 4, 1936, in Humboldt, IA. He graduated from Lincoln High School and received an associate degree from AIB in Des Moines, IA. He worked as the Chief Accountant at Ames Laboratory (ISU) for 40 years.
Don married Kathleen McDonald in 1963. To this union two daughters were born, Julie & Donna. Kathy passed away in 1992. In October of 1994 Don married Connie Dowling.
Don enjoyed many things such as: traveling, playing golf, watching sports (especially ISU and the Chicago Cubs), seeing friends at the Elks Club, and playing card games with friends & family.
Don is survived by his wife Connie, daughters; Julie (Bobby) Cattanach and Donna (Jamie) Ostrander, step-son Sean (Jenna) Dowling, and grandchildren; Katie Cattanach, Gradyn & Grace Dowling, and Hailey & Allison Ostrander. Sister Gina Waters, sisters-in-law Deloris Heim and Sheryl (Len) Pierce and many nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his wife Kathy, brothers: Gerald, Floyd, and Roy, sister Caryl Gene and brother-in-law Russ Waters.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St Jude Children's Research Hospital or United Way of Story County.

Don was such an amazing guy, I was lucky to have him as a boss, mentor, and friend for many years. He took a chance hiring me to work in the Ames Lab accounting office,
patiently overseeing my on the job training, encouraged me to take classes and supported promotions. He was also fun-loving and we had many good times at work and outside of work. I will always remember one day when he drove us up to a small town locker at 4 am to pick up a pig in the trunk of his Oldsmobile for an Ames Lab pig roast. We had many group get togethers after work either at a park in the summer or a happy hour someplace, playing games and having fun.
He and the other managers, Dale, Louie, Les, Tom, Jerry, also hosted many Christmas parties and annual summer BBQs.
He had so many interests and there was nothing Don couldn't do. He had such a great sense of humor and I will miss our visits. My condolences to you Connie, Julie, Donna and your families.
Don was a great roll model for Gina & myself as we grew up together. He always had time for us & my
sisters. My grandmother was a very special lady & proud of Don (Donny) who had a great carrier & helped support Gina her life adventures. God bless his children, wife & all family & friends. Dominic Tucci
