Richard Judson Sr. Obituary
Richard James Judson Sr. passed away, at his home in Ames, Iowa on Tuesday, February 11, at the age of 89. A visitation will be held at Grandon Funeral Home (414 Lincoln Way, Ames, Iowa 50010) Tuesday, February 18, at 10:00 a.m. There will be a service afterward at 11:00 a.m. For those who would like to join, there will be a processional to Gilbert Cemetery in Gilbert, Iowa, and a luncheon to follow.
Richard was born on August 1, 1935 in Chicago, Illinois to James F. Judson and Louise T. Koehler. His elementary years were spent in Des Plaines, as well as his high school years, attending Maine High until 1953. Years later, after his retirement, he looked forward to returning for his class reunions each year, and reconnecting with his friends from that time in his life.
Richard married Barbara Andress on September 29, 1956, after only nine dates, and over a course of only two months! During the beginning of their marriage, he was involved in active duty in the U.S. Navy from 1956-1958.
Following his time in the Navy, Richard was an auto mechanic. Shortly after the birth of his daughter in 1965, he decided to attend Southern Adventist College and become a pastor. For the next twenty years, he served in Florida, Iowa, Missouri, and Colorado, helping to revive and plant churches and schools. His main focus was on Sabbath school and community service.
When he moved back to Florida in the 1990's, Richard spent time working as a psych tech and security at Manatee Memorial Hospital. In 2002, after retiring, Richard and Barbara moved back to Iowa with their granddaughter, Abigail Judson, to be with their daughter and her family. They enjoyed being grandparents and were still very active in their church.
Richard was preceded in death by three half-brothers: Jim Judson, Bill Judson, and Doug Judson; as well as his son, Richard James Judson Jr., and his wife, Barbara Ann Judson. He is survived by his daughter, Barbara (Norman) Miller of Boone; four grandchildren, Amber (Chris) Bower, Andrew Miller, Abigail Judson, and Ashton Miller.

The Ames SDA church kids enjoyed all your stories said to them. You were instrumental in church activities even in old age. You were a blessing to the church,
The Koehler kids always were excited to hear that our cousin Richard would be coming to visit us. He was always full of energy, ideas, humor and much more. As we grew older Richard and Barbara always ensured that we were part of their lives, and we were blessed by each moment we shared together with them and their family. Richard will be well remembered as we gather around the table and tell our stories about family. May God bless the reunion of Richard and Barbara in Heaven. We love you, Richard! You were a blessing to us.
