Martha Jones Behrens, 80, of Ames passed away on Tuesday, May 20, 2025 at Northridge Village in Ames, IA.
Martha was born in Spencer, Iowa to M. Dale and Katherine (Thomas) Jones on March 23, 1945. Martha spent her early years in Dickens, Iowa growing up on the farm. She was a graduate of Terril Community High School with the class of 1963 and attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD following her graduation. Martha retired from Iowa State University after many years of working in the Agriculture Science department as an office manager.
In her free time, Martha could be found whipping up tasty treats in her kitchen, more often than not cookies that were one (or two) short of a full dozen because you had to taste test them before serving. Martha loved to travel, visiting family across the country. Music brought joy to her life, whether hymns or Elvis, it always made her smile. She was one of the strongest people you would ever meet, never complaining about what was ailing her but always asking about you instead. She will leave a lasting impression on all that knew her as a friend.
She is survived by her son Kurt Behrens, sister Susan Brumbaugh, and niece Tara Hagen.
She is preceded in death by her parents Dale and Katherine Jones.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 20th at 1:00 pm at the Unity Church in Ames, IA.
Marty was my dear friend for many years and I loved her. We had great times traveling together, seeking new and novel places to visit and dine. We could chat for hours about our memories. I will miss her cheery hellos and excited voice when she found something new to do. She was a good and strong person and I miss her.
Marty became a dear friend while at Northridge Village. Enjoyed spending card night with her and visiting about everything under the sun. It was especially interesting to hear about the work she did at Iowa State and hear how fulfilling that work was for her. She loved the port wine cheese and green olives; I enjoyed bringing those to her. Marty and Mom shared their birthdays as they were just a day apart giving more reason the celebrate for multiple days. She became a wonderful friend to my Mom who was also at Northridge. May you rest in peace, Marty,
