Douglass Walter Lawrence passed away peacefully on January 6th, 2026 at Northridge Village surrounded by family.

Funeral services for Doug Lawrence will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, January 28th, 2026, at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 1416 20th Street in Ames, with Pastor James DuBois officiating.

Visitation will be held from 4:00-6:00 PM on Tuesday January 27th, also at Northminster Presbyterian Church in Ames.

Doug was born on May 7th, 1942 to Hildath (Sloan) Lawrence and Elmer Lawrence in Kankakee, IL. Doug grew up on a farm outside of Manteno, IL and attended Manteno High School. Graduating in 1960. Doug then attended Iowa State University and earned a B.S. in Agronomy. Graduating in 1965.

Doug met the love of his life at age 15, Janet Bringelson of Homewood, IL. They were married on May 11th, 1963 in Homewood, IL. Their 1st Son Mark was born in 1965 in Ames, IA. Followed by another son Scott in 1967 in Mendota, IL. Doug started out in Ag Business in 1965 in Ames, Ia. His jobs then took his family to Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska, Burlington, Ia. and then back to Ames in 2002.

Doug liked to play tennis, golf and playing games and cards with family and friends. He enjoyed woodworking and tinkering around in his garage fixing things. Doug also took tremendous pride in keeping the lawn looking good. One of Doug's favorite things to do was participate in or watch any activities his grandchildren were doing. Doug was an elder in the Presbyterian Church and a member of the building and grounds committee at Northminster Presbyterian Church.

Growing up on a farm, Doug learned many talents. One of them was fixing things. He was always there helping family and friends work on projects, big or small. When finished he would always say his famous phrase "I should have been an engineer." Doug's humor and wit were intertwined in his daily life. He always tried to get a smile or lighten the mood with one of his corny dad jokes or a funny saying. This is what we will miss the most.

Doug is survived by his wife of 62 years, Janet Lawrence. Sons Mark (Anne) Lawrence of Omaha, NE. Scott (Christine) Lawrence of Ames, IA. Grandchildren: Steven (Alissa) Lawrence of Ames, IA. Natalie Lawrence of Ames, IA. Vic Lawrence of Omaha, NE and Elizabeth Lawrence of Lincoln, NE. Great granddaughter Brooklyn Lawrence. His Sister Norma Borkowski of Ft. Meyers, FL.

Doug is preceded in death by his parents Hildath and Elmer Lawrence and his brother David Lawrence.

The family would like to thank the staff at Maggie's Place and Northridge Village for their care of Doug these last few months. In lieu of flowers, donations can be given to the Douglass Lawrence Memorial fund at Northminster Presbyterian Church, Ames
