Deborah Ann Burrier was born on October 9, 1955 to Paul and Catherine (Williams) Burrier in New Jersey. Growing up, the family made their home in Pennsylvania, and later, California, where she attended and graduated from Los Alamitos High School. She later attended Franciscan University of Steubenville, in Ohio, where she earned a Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy.
Deborah served in the United States Army during the final hours of Vietnam and continuing into peacetime. It was during this time when she was united in marriage to Thomas Casey. The young couple raised their family in the greater Washington DC area, until moving to Ames, in 1985.
Deborah worked as a library assistant at Iowa State University for over 30 years until she retired.
Deborah found her greatest joy in the simple pleasures of life. She loved "peace and quiet," yet was an avid traveler who explored the world with her sisters and friends, from the bright lights of Broadway and London to the beaches of Hawaii and Florida. At home, she was a fixture of her community, often found water walking or Planet Fitness or enjoying her favorite British shows like Call the Midwife and Doc Martin. A voracious reader and a fan of road trips, she lived life with a curiosity that never faded.
Deborah was a loving and dedicated wife and mother. She is described as being a "force of nature," she was kind, caring, and put the needs of others in front of her own. That being said, she loved to ask lots of questions of those around her, due to her genuine fascination with people, sharing her kindness, and sometimes, unsolicited advice, with all she encountered.
Deborah is survived by her husband, Tom Casey; her children, Nathan Casey of Des Moines, Beth Casey of Rochester, Minnesota, and Mike Casey of Ames; her siblings, Jeanne (Joe) Price of Newport Beach, California, Paula (Dave) Lund of Prescott, Arizona; her beloved grandcat, Lucy, and granddog, Poppy; along with a community of friends and extended family who will miss her vibrant spirit.
She was predeceased by her parents and brother Michael Burrier.
Debbie was such a loving and supportive mom to her kids. This was witnessed when I had Beth and Michael in my classroom. She will be missedâ€¦đŸ’•
I'll miss Debbie stopping to talk about current events, politics, Ames history, paint colors, butterflies, ect. I never had a dull moment chatting with her. She will be greatly missed by my little family on the corner. Our neighborhood will not feel right without her.
I loved taking long walks with Debbie. We spoke passionately about politics, current events, and our families. I am heartbroken and will miss her forever.
