Earl Solberg age 82, of Ames, Iowa died Monday June 2, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. A gathering of family and friends will be 5:00 — 8:00 PM Wednesday, June 4, at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care, 414 Lincoln Way Ames. Funeral Service and Celebration of Earl’s life will be 2:00 PM Thursday June 5, at United Church of Christ-Congregational in Ames. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Jewell, Iowa.
Earl Solberg was born January 26, 1926 in Pekin, Illinois, to Elmer and Nellie (Keena) Solberg. The family moved to Jewell, Iowa, in 1929 in order for his father to continue working for the Chicago Railroad. He graduated from Jewell High School in 1944 and enlisted in the Navy immediately after. He was stationed in Seattle, Washington, until his discharge in November 1945.
When Earl returned to Jewell, he worked on a dairy farm, then the Phillips 66 Service Station. He married Mary Peterson in August 1956. Of this union one child, Kim Ann, was born. Earl and Mary divorced in March 1963.
In June 1964, Earl married Myrna Fries Wiese, who had two children, Daryl Wayne and Kim Annette. Of this union, a son, Jeffrey Scott, was born. Earl and Myrna were married 42 years.
In April 1970, Earl went to work for the ISU Athletic Department as a grounds crew worker at Clyde Williams Field. He later became the Head Grounds Crew Supervisor of the “new” Cyclone Stadium, practice fields, and the Southwest Complex. He loved his job, the coaches, athletes and Cyclone sports!
Earl played baseball and basketball in high school and continued to be very interested in sports throughout his life, particularly high school and college basketball and football. He enjoyed going to the kids activities and to the grandchildren’s later in life. He loved attending South Hamilton sporting events, especially softball. He also enjoyed dancing, bowling, and cribbage.
Earl is survived by his children, Kim Ann Reno and her husband Randy and granddaughter Randi-Kay Reno of Riverview, Florida, Jeff Solberg and his wife Cami and granddaughters, Heather and Christi of Ames, Daryl and his wife Lisa and grandsons Murphy and Alex of Iowa Falls; and Kim Fraser and her husband Dave and grandsons Adam and Andy of Huxley; and nieces and nephews.
Earl was preceded in death by his wife, Myrna, in February 2007, his brothers, Art, Ray, Glenn, and Harry (Bud) and his parents.
In leiu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to Hospice; the United Church of Christ-Congregational or the South Hamilton Schools Foundation.
Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care is assisting the family with arrangements.
