Donald was born January 12, 1918 in Howard Township in Story County to Lloyd and Alma (Johnson) Furman.
He married Ruth Wyatt on August 3, 1957. They just celebrated 55 years of a wonderful marriage.
Donald was proud to have served his country in World War II serving in the Army. After returning home to Story County he started building homes in Ames. In 1952 a partnership was formed with Erben Hunziker. For over 50 years H & F Builders and Hunziker & Furman Realty were one of the most prominent companies in the Ames area.
One of Donald's favorite things to do was to drive to each of his farms and check the growth of the crops that year.
Donald was very happy in 2007 when he and Ruth made a donation to the City of Ames to help fund the aquatic center. During the construction of the aquatic center Donald enjoyed driving down through the site to check the progress.
Donald is survived by his wife Ruth and one daughter Mary (Richard) Fitch, three grandchildren, Nicholas, Holly and Jenna and one great grandchild Devin. Also surviving are his sister Muriel Stone and brother Eugene Furman along with 13 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Lyle Furman, two sisters, Ardyce Hoffmann and Leilia Smith.

Ruth, Mary, Rich and family:
We are thinking of you and sorry to hear about Don's death. Gary and I have so many memories of your family, but our best memories center around our times at the Furman/Payer cabin at Clear Lake. I guess that created the desire for the next generation to continue the tradition of spending time with family and friends at Clear Lake.
Don and Erb can now be planning the next subdivision in heaven with all of the others who have gone before!
Ruth,
My sympathies to you and your daughter on the loss of your beloved husband/father, Don.
Our 2 families go back to around 1965 or earlier when my late mother, Alice Tungesvik, cleaned your home until 1989 when her health became bad due to her colon to liver cancer!
My 1st apt. here in Ames was a H/F one right across the street from the original offices.
I have the needlework you did showing all our names of my late parents, Silas and Alice.
May God walk with you all during your grief.
Continue talking to Don daily as you've done all your lives.
Get out and play videos with him on listening to his voice/laughter and watching his gestures.
Betty
