I never had the opportunity to meet Cliff, but we talked once a year in a fall when he called to order calendars, something he took over from Bob Vohs. We always had a great chat and I looked forward to his call. When I didn't get it this year, I went looking and discovered his obit. I had no idea he was 96. He always sounded like someone much younger. Reading about his life, it was easy to see why.
I'm so glad I had the chance to know him even from a distance. Holding you all fiercely in the light and love of family and good memories as you all heal.

I didn't know Cliff myself, but my dad was a fishing and handball buddy of Cliff's, and spoke of him often. Dad was always looking forward to their next fish fry, and made sure to let me know the outcome of their most recent handball game. I'm sure that Cliff will be greatly missed by his friends and family.

I am so sorry for your loss. I was a student at ISU in business and industrial engineering way back. Cliff and Roy Park ("thick as thieves") were always collaborating . Two of my favorite profs who broke the mold as they allows students to call them by their first names! Back then, that kind of behavior was frowned upon. Cliff and Roy got me into Bob Ray's Iowa Coal Research project and for a year I got to play in the rarified air at ISU. What an experience for a 20 year old immature kid. However, it shaped me for the future. Cliff was one of a kind! I have and will miss him. Godspeed, Cliff!

Cliff was quite a fella. I had the pleasure of knowing him when I would deliver his mail on Scholl Road in Ames. I was the sub and we always would chat if there was a pkg or he happened to be outside when I walked by. He always had something positive to say even if there happened to be a glitch in their forwarding when they had plans to be gone for awhile. I was blessed to meet him, his smile warm and contagious, and I am glad to have some pleasant memories.
May he Rest In Peace, whistling all the way to heaven.
