WOW! A life WELL lived! I am 11 years younger than Fred, and grew up in the West Des Moines Methodist Church. My Mother helped out in the Sunday school nursery. Jeane and I were married there. I can remember back in the 1950's when he and Virginia left for Ames, IA. Ames' gain, West Des Moines' loss. A lot of the congregation was sadden in their departure. I believe that after a while, his sister Phyllis, and husband Carl, moved to Indianola, IA. Also, way back in my memory, I believe Fred's mother in her later years lived at 701 - 5th Street. I was introduced to Fred after the War (WW II), when he, Don Roush and Leroy Watters returned to the WDM Methodist Church and all took very active parts. They were the BEST role models a young man could have. God Bless you daughters.

I knew and respected Fred Bunce for well over 50 years. He may have been the friendliest man I ever met. His active involvement in local Ames business, Kiwanis, church, golf, and numerous community activities produced a very large circle of friends. He lived a full and active life and he truly enjoyed his key role in the fabric of the Ames community. Fred and Virginia also built a close and loving family with their three daughters. They welcomed me into that family many years ago and my children have always enjoyed the time with their grandfather and the Bunce family. Fred was always welcoming, positive, and supportive.
I join Sharon, Susan, and Sandy in their deep appreciation of a fine man and the legacy he built of a strong family and the example of an active life of community involvement.

Your dad was an amazing man and will be remembered by so many for all of his contributions and kindness. He was always such a gentle man and in all of our years of growing up together, I don't ever recall him raising his voice even once! It is never easy to lose our parents and it will forever leave a touch of sadness in our hearts. So many memories they gave us to hold onto forever and to pass on to our own children. Fred, this here is your golfing buddy that you met while having a short stay at Green Hills. Even before you took me on as your golfing partner I will always remember you as an extremely friendly and unselfish person. You are truly one of many values.

Fred was one of the most kind and friendly man I have ever met. His girls were close friends of ours, we were neighbors on 20th St., we would visit often at George’s Pizza, and many good memories of him will live on. He loved and he was loved.
