Howard R. Hammond, age 88, of Slater, Iowa, passed away at Mary Greeley Medical Center on July 23, 2018 due to complications from a heart attack, Guillain-Barre Syndrome/Acute Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyradiculoneuropathy and Read Obituary
I did not know Mr. Hammond well, but I did see him at Ballard Dollars for Scholars events when he gave out the scholarship honoring his late son, Alan. He was clearly an admired, well-respected man in the Ballard community and his commitment to education and support of Ballard Dollars for Scholars will be missed.

While serving in Korea Howard became a footnote to history. From day one of his service in Korea he travel with his posssessions in his suitcase. Others used duffel bags. This was noticed by a non-fiction waqr novel writer and appeared in his book about the Korean War. When asked why, It is what I am used to. I shall always cherish the time he spent with me in Alaska during his time here. The family reunions and just plain visits. RIP Howard. Rich Freese
Howard and Jan attended many dances and were great dancers with our band. We will miss his great smile and positive attitude.

My sincere sympathy to Howard's family and especially to Jan. I know them from the dance floor and so sad not to see Howard's smiling face with Jan at the dances. The Lord's Blessings to all.
I was expecting to see Howard and Jan dancing to our band at Prairie Meadows Tuesday. So shocked to hear of his passing. He will be missed. My condolences to his family and to Jan.

Howard was a pillar of the community and the very definition of a gentle man. Every interaction I had with him while growing up in Slater was a lesson in kindness and civility, even toward a paperboy collecting once a week. He made Slater a better place for everyone and he will be very much missed.
