Irene Shireman's Obituary
A Memorial Service for Irene Shireman will be held at 2:00pm on November 25, 2023 at First Baptist Church, 200 Lynn Ave. Ames, Iowa. The Family invites you to join us after the service for a time of visiting in the Church Fellowship Hall with cookies and beverages. Irene Ruth Koopman Shireman was born at Pittsburg, Kansas, December 2, 1931, to Elmer and Hilda Schlichting Koopman. She graduated from the Walnut High School, Walnut, KS, and the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, Fort Scott, KS. She worked as a Registered Nurse in hospitals in Massachusetts, Wisconsin, and Iowa, and at Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center in Topeka, KS from 1977 to 1992 serving as orthopedics unit supervisor and staff nurse. She lived in Topeka for 17 years and moved to Lenexa, KS, with her husband in 1994. She was a member of the Prairie Baptist Church of Prairie Village, KS. She and Wayne moved to Ames, Iowa in 2006, and served as summer volunteers at the American Baptist Assembly, Green Lake, WI. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Ames. Irene was married to Wayne A. Shireman at Brazilton, KS, on August 16, 1953. He survives. She had three children, Catherine Parrish (Joe) of Nevada, IA; Christopher (Deanna) of Rockford, IL; and Daniel (Junko) of Tokyo, Japan, six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She also has a brother, Loyd (Jan) Koopman, Iowa City, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Ray Koopman and sister, Geneva Koopman Meadows.
