To the Burgason family...Chris and I were sad to hear of Verle's passing. We were blessed to work with many great leaders during our tenures at the Iowa Newspaper Association but the fact is, there might not be an Iowa Newspaper Association had it not been for Verle. In 1982, the board of the Iowa Press Association (IPA) and the Iowa Daily Press Association (IDPA) facilitated 34 meetings over 52 weeks in an effort to merge the two organizations. Twice these meetings ended with one side or the other walking out or declaring the subject of a merger closed. In both cases, Verle, from the IDPA Board and Al Schafer of Eldora, from the IPA Board, reached out to one another by phone and found a way to get people back to the negotiating table. Today the INA is among the nation's strongest press associations. Thanks in large part to the leadership of Verle Burgason.

Verle H. Burgason -- what a beautiful man, a friend to so many, and a role model for us all. We will dearly miss that gentle giant, but we are much better off for knowing him and claiming him as a friend.
Cindy and I first met Verle,and his beloved wife Jo, while playing in Locust League couples golf at the Ames Golf and Country Club in the mid 1980s. Verle (and Jo) treated us like their dearest friends, and they were such a joy to be around. Verle's ever-present smile was contagious, and his community spirit, zest for living and other-centeredness were inspiring. What a Good Man. He truly left our world in a better place. And now he is in that Better Place, resting in God's Eternal Peace. Blessings and love to his family. Tom and Cindy Stark

My condolences to Steve, and the entire family. I got to know Verle in my four years at Iowa State as Steve's friend. Such a warm and loving man and Father. It is truly sad when God takes one of our finest.

My sincerest sympathy to the Burgason family. Verle was my first boss. I was fresh out of ISU's journalism school--eager to sell advertising and meet sales goals, yet having so much more to learn. Verle was very patient and understanding, professional and personable. I learned many valuable life lessons from him--he holds a special spot in my Ames' memories. I am so sad for all of you, yet comforted that Verle is no longer ill. I am personally sad, as he was always a very meaningful friend to Dad, and I especially cherished Verle's friendship since Dad died almost 30 years ago. I'm feeling as if an era had ended. The earthly world has lost so many outstanding business people, who went the extra mile to continually improve and enhance the Ames community, it's services, opportunities and successes - by any measure.
