Knowing Sandy was an immense gift and actually changed how Joel and I decorate our home for the holidays. We were gifted an opportunity to see their beautiful Christmas tree, and were so inspired with the idea of hanging our holiday updates for each year as “ornaments” that we’ve done it ever since. It is a piece of her and Dr. Horton that lives on in our home.
I have known Sandy since we were basketball rivals in junior high and then sorority sisters at Delta Zeta. She always kept us connected with Christmas cards and I enjoyed every one. I will miss her loving and caring grace. Marilyn Textrum
Sandy was a great neighbor, quintessential hostess, dedicated Iowa State fan and friend. She will be missed. God’s speed, Sandy.
Although we did not know Sandy well, she was a great neighbor and we have fond memories of the fabulous neighborhood Christmas parties she gave annually in her home. It was a special time. Our sincere sympathies to her family.

Words cannot express how much I appreciate all you did for Theta Delta Chi and myself. Learned so much and you inspired me to continue to be involved just as you were for DZ. Always by Dicks side and the forever a true proud Cyclone. A special lady whose memories will last with me forever. We are very sad to hear of Sandy's passing. She was a very capable person with many accomplishments. Sherry and I hope her family will find peace as they share memories of her.
I truly appreciated Sandy's kindness and hospitality providing holiday parties at their home with husband Dick Horton. I believe she hosted an annual party for 40 years allowing the College Heights neighbors to reconnect and share stories over numerous interesting topics including ISU. Thank you for these fond memories and for all of your contributions to the community.
Dick and family, Frank and I send our condolences. It is hard to believe Sandy has died, she was such an alive person. I knew her a bit when we were ISU students and better when I worked at ISU in the 70's. Then Frank and I married and bought a house on Donald Street and our oldest child was born around the same time as you were, Lisa. You girls might have attended the same preschool. Dick, we will remember Sandy and your generous and thoughtful gifts of time and get togethers and Christmas greetings. Sandy was so good at so many things. We are so sorry for your loss. Sandy was a dedicated role model and advisor for us at Delta Zeta - not only there in Ames, but on the national stage as well. She was a connector - sharing stories and history that brought DZ sisters together regardless of age or geographies. She touched hundreds of lives, and leaves behind a lasting legacy.
I came to know Sandy, first through our respective membership in ISU's fraternities and sororities. As both a student and later when I returned as Assistant and Associate Dean of Students, she was in several important leadership roles. Her husband Dick was likewise and through the years as others have noted they were rewarded as alumni for all they have given. The Horton legacy will remain because of her work and I know Dick will continue to do so. Tom Goodale
