Carole -
Although we haven't seen each other in many years - during which I changed my name from Mary Crum - I value the influence and friendship you gave to me and my children during our years in Ames. I am sorry for your loss, especially for you and your grandchildren, but know that you and Jack created a wonderful home and strongly influenced your community, especially in the arts. Our boys were great friends when they were at Crawford and you were a diligent defender of our little Katie, who is now a teacher and has two boys of her own. David is in California and Franklin in Indonesia. Fond regards to each of you.

I am teaching during the service tomorrow but I will be thinking of you. Jack was a terrific member of the ISU family and someone we always looked up to as an example of a scholar, a University citizen, and a lover of learning. He was interested in all areas of academics from fine arts to hard sciences and was a terrific role model for his fellow Phi Beta Kappans.
