Gary L. Swartz of Ames died on May 16, 2014, from complications following a stroke.

Gary was born July 11, 1951, in Hampton, IA, and spent most of his adult life in Ames. He enjoyed camping, boating and fishing, all things electronic and debating politics. But what he was most known for among all who loved him--and there were many--was his passion for entertaining at his home. All were welcome, and no one ever waited long for a beverage or a "mere smidgen" of food. His love for family and friends was shown best through his extraordinary cooking, and he is no doubt creating something "succulent" for a higher audience at this moment. Gary will be deeply missed for his unique sense of humor, his loving, generous spirit and, of course, his cooking.

Professionally, Gary was co-owner and mechanic at Ames Power Sports, which he started with long-time partner Bill Schwertley more than 25 years ago.

He is survived by his wife Colleen Hamilton; sisters-in-law Rosie (the late Denny) Swartz, Nancy (the late Terry) Spiess and Laura Hamilton; brother-in-law Tim (Karen) Hamilton; nephews Mike (Beth) Swartz, Tory (Eva) Spiess and Jahan Hamilton; nieces Tanya (Dane) Larson and Anjali Hamilton; five great-nieces and nephew; and many friends. He is preceded in death by his parents Lowell and Pearl Swartz, and his brother Denny Swartz.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2014, beginning at 1 p.m. at the residence of 736 Garnet Drive in Ames.

To honor Gary's love of the outdoors, and rescued animals (he adored his rescued cats, Chuck and Ozzie), donations may be made in his memory to the Ames Animal Shelter, the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, or Story County Conservation.
