Dr. Patrick Hugh Kain, age 68, of Ames died at his home on Monday, Jan. 4, 2010. Visitation will be 4:00 -- 8:00 pm Friday, Jan 8 at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care, 414 Lincoln Way. A Funeral service will be at 2:00 pm Sat. Jan. 9 at Collegiate United Methodist Church in Ames.

Patrick was born June 6, 1941 in Algona, Iowa. He was the son of George Patrick and Florence (Black) Kain. Patrick grew up on a farm in Plum Creek in Kossuth County. He attended country school through 5th grade and graduated from Algona High School in 1958 and later from Iowa State University. After graduation, he moved to Oregon and began work as a forest ranger. After two years, he returned to Iowa and graduated from the University of Iowa with his MD and did his residence at Broadlawns Hospital in Des Moines. He was in Fort Hood, TX in the Army as a General Medical officer. At one point while in the Army, Patrick was sent to Nicaragua to help treat victims of a massive earthquake. On March 13, 1971, he married Janelle Marie Gearhart in Cedar Rapids, IA. The couple then moved to New Hampton, Iowa where he was involved in private family practice before moving to Ames in 1985 where Patrick worked as a physician at the Student Health Center at Iowa State University, part of that time as Chief of Staff, before retiring in 1995. He enjoyed camping, fishing, outdoors activity, woodworking, and reading. He especially loved reading to his grandchildren and passing that passion on to them.

He is survived by his wife Janelle of Ames, children Robert and Keri Kain of Ames, Laura and Kari Kain of Ankeny, and James Kain of Ames, three grandchildren; Sydney, Jordan and Jamison, sister Nancy Kain and Don Cook of Loveland, CO, and brother John and Barb Kain of Phoenix, AZ, and his dog KC.

Patrick was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Maribel Kain.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Ames Public Library or Collegiate United Methodist Church.

My condolences to the Kain family on the loss of Pat. While his younger siblings were my age, my parents always spoke so highly of Pat and how proud his family was of his accomplishments. God bless you.

Eugene Loebach, cousin on Kain side on Jan 16, 2010

Most of what I remember about Pat came from spending time with cousin Rob and Laura over at Uncle Dick (George) and aunt Florence and an outing or two to Call Park there in Algona. He was a big man, one of the few adults I had to look up to (literally) when I became a teen. Always quick with that huge grin of his. My condolences for your loss. Pat will be sorely missed.

Please accept our condolences. I am the son of Richard R. Kain, grandson of Robert F. Kain. I lived close to George and Florence when I was a boy in Algona and remember my cousin Darin and I spending time at their house. I didn’t know Pat but I’m sure he was a good man. Just like his dad George and his brother Robert (my grandpa) and Edward and John. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this time.

Dear Janelle, Robert, Laura, James, Nancy, Don, Barb and JC--
I am so sorry for your loss. Although most of my memoires of Pat are childhood memories, I know he led an adult life of extraordinary courage as he faced health challenges, particularly in recent years.
