Graden Harold "H" Newell was born in Marshalltown, Iowa on April 4, 1931. He passed away on Sunday, May 22, 2011 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Iowa with his loving family by his side. The family will receive one hour before the 1:00 p.m. Thursday May 26, Mass of Christian Burial at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Ames.
"H" graduated from Ames High School in 1949 and from Iowa State University in 1956. He married Joan Kelly on June 5, 1954. They spent 46 years together before her passing in 2000. They had four children, five grandchildren and one great grandchild.
"H" served in the Air Force and then was a businessman in Ames. Through the years, he owned Everet's Flower Shop, was a farm manager for Litchfield Realty Company, and owned the Century 21 Real Estate office. He was a hard worker who was just as dedicated to developing his own career as he was to helping others start their own. He was an active member of his community, serving on the Ames City Council, Mary Greeley Medical Center Board of Trustees, and president of the Ames Board of Realtors.
His door was always open to family and friends at both his home in Ames and at his cabin on Ten Mile Lake in Hackensack, MN. Good times were had by all.
Those left to cherish his memory are his loving companion, Beverly McMahon; his children, Nancy Newell of Bloomington, MN, Ellen (Dennis) Owings of Ames, IA, Peggy (Brian) Ganske of Augusta, GA, and John (Vickie) Newell of Ames, IA; five grandchildren, Megan (Rich), Maura, Brian, Hannah and Colin; great grandchild, Connor; brother-in-law, Larry (Marilyn) Kelly. Memorial contributions may be made to Mary Greeley Medical Center Foundation in support of the Israel Family Hospice House.

John-just heard about your dad. My sympathy to you and your family. He was a great man that always had a smile on his face and a story to tell. I'll never forget how much fun we always had on our hockey road trips and summer visits to Ten Mile Lake. My prayers are with you.

My sympathy to the family. My ex worked at Evert's in the late 1960's and 1970's, so it's been a long time since I saw him. I was sad to notice his obit in the Des Moines Register today. H often stopped in the shop to see how things were going and "borrow" a handful of nuts from the candy store. I never heard him say a cuss word harsher than "oh crumb". He and Jo and you kids were around for shop get-togethers. My prayers are with you.

CandleI considered "H" a good friend, confident, and peer. Always enjoyed his humor. He will be missed.

The years I worked with H were some of the most enjoyable of my working life-
my sympathy to Bev and to his family!

Sue Bokhoven on May 25, 2011

I am so blessed to have known H. We had wonderful times together as we drove around town or cruised through the countryside. His wit, humor and wisdom touched my heart and life. May God comfort you as you celebrate his life and reflect on the heritage he has left you.
