On September 29, 2022, Ames, Iowa lost a special citizen: longtime Ames resident, Ruth Hiatt Thompson. A native Nebraskan, Ruth was born in Diller, Nebraska in 1931, daughter of Clarence Wright Hiatt and Mae Deck Hiatt. In early childhood she lived on a farm, receiving her early education in a country school she often reached by horseback! Love of family, a strong work ethic and high integrity were hallmarks of Ruth's life.

Ruth lived in Lincoln, Nebraska during her youth and early adult years. She graduated Lincoln High School, then attended the University of Nebraska where she pledged Sigma Kappa. She married and had a son and two daughters. In 1968 Ruth's family moved from Nebraska to Ames, where she enjoyed the community, her children's school activities, and university events and activities. She worked for many years at Iowa State University.

As a member of the Ames community, she enjoyed giving back to others. Over the years Ruth was involved in many organizations including PTA, P.E.O., Daughters of the American Revolution, Ames Museum, Ames Historical Society, Iowa State's Women's Club, and others.

Ruth had a servant's heart and was dedicated to the needs and well-being of others. She was happiest when helping friends, both new and old. A lifelong avid reader, Ruth had a special place in her heart for children's literacy. For years she participated in a weekly school program, reading to children in Ames elementary schools and inspiring young minds.

Among her many interests, Ruth had a lifelong love of music and was accomplished on the piano and the accordion - much to the delight of her children.

Ruth is survived by her three children, Becky (Rick) Lorenzen, Grant (Patsy) Phipps, and Nancy Phipps Bayerle, Stepchildren Margaret Ann Trail, Jerome Thompson, Carolyn Abbott, seven grandsons, eleven great-grandchildren, sister-in-Law Mary Hiatt, nieces and nephews.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, first husband Roger K. Phipps, husband Dr. Louis M. Thompson, stepson Louis Thompson, stepdaughter Glenda Thompson Knight, brother Robert Hiatt, and half-sister Donna (Darrell) Hiatt Rippeteau.

Ruth leaves behind a legacy of loving, caring and serving others and a deep enjoyment of life.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ames Public Library Friends Foundation (Children's Programs). Online donations may be made at aplff.org/ .

I am so sorry to just hear about Ruth's passing through a mutual friend of ours. Ruth was such an inspiration to me when I was in graduate school at Iowa State University. I would credit her love and support as critical in the completion of my program! Even her name for me, "Sunshine," lifted my spirits every time I saw her and it helped me get through things that weren't going well for me. I knew that she believed in me!! She also celebrated the great things that were happening during my program and in my life too!

Ruth was so encouraging, patient, supportive, loving, caring, and was an amazing listener! We kept in touch after I left Iowa via phone calls and my occasional visits back to Iowa. I was touched when she sent me all of the cards I had given to her over the years. Ruth was so special to me and I will always love and remember her! She was a truly a shining star in my life, which I will forever be grateful!!!

Ruth and I worked in Curtiss Hall and established a close friendship continuing when we retired. Over the years we enjoyed shopping escapades to DSM and afternoon chats over tea. We had Nov. birthdays so lunch and pie were always scheduled. Ruth loved to entertain and often invited friends for tea when family visited. Good friends like Ruth are rare and I truly miss her and think about her often. With deepest sympathy, Kay Swenson

Thank you, Aunt Ruth, and your then husband Roger, and your children Becky, Nancy, and Grant, for many, many kindness in 1965-8 when I came to the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. Thank you for being such a great lifetime, Nebraskan friend to my Mother Donna. And, later we so enjoyed visiting you in Ames as Sandra and I transited I-80/90, upstate NYS to and from Lincoln. During life, you were a very strong woman, mother, and aunt. We are poorer than you have passed on, but we will visit you often at your sepulchre. Love, Bruce and Family.
