Joe was born at home to Glen and June Hyde on December 25th, 1944, in Hitt, Missouri. He graduated from Memphis High School in 1962. After high school, Joe enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving in the Philippines for a year and a half; he was then stationed in California, Texas, and Wisconsin. After his discharge from the military, he worked at the Iowa Army ammunition plant in Burlington, Iowa. He then utilized the G.I. bill to attend and graduate from Northeast Missouri State University (now Truman State) in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. In 1976 he moved to Iowa to work as a Correctional Officer at the Anamosa prison. He then moved to Ames, Iowa, where he worked in a halfway house. For a time, he worked at Presto-X pest control. He then returned to work as a correctional officer before retiring in 2011.
Joe and Dixie Jo Fiester were united in marriage on October 2nd, 1976. A son, Justin Joseph, and a daughter, Emily June, were born into this union. Dixie preceded him in death on October 17th, 2018.
Joe loved to play pool and ride his bicycle. He once rode his bike from Ames, Iowa, to Memphis, Missouri, and back. He loved to pedal out into the county to smell the flowers and see the sites; he would often come home with odd nick-nacks he found on the side of the road. He played pool at the Corner Pocket in Ames, Iowa, and was the 2013 Senior pool champion. Throughout his life, he often returned to Memphis, Missouri; his heart really belonged there. Joe loved nothing more than a hot summer day. In his later years, you were likely to find him sitting under the sun in a folding chair. Once last summer, I sat beside him and asked, "Dad, what would you like me to put in your obituary?" He replied, "Well, I suppose you should mention I was born at home in Hitt, Missouri, and I'm just a farm boy at heart."
Survivors include his daughter, Billie Jo Waddle (Kevin), from a previous marriage; his son Justin and grandson Ivan, of Des Moines, Iowa; and his daughter Emily Hyde (Edward Bignar), of Ames, Iowa. Joe is also survived by a sister, Marcine Evans of Memphis, Missouri; brother Bob Hyde (Marlene) of Lewiston, Idaho; and a brother, Dick Hyde (Jan) of Kirksville, Missouri. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Dixie, a sister, Jean Lancaster, two brothers, Donald and James Hyde, and a niece, Karen Waibel Shepherd.
Today marks one year since you left us. It’s been a long year of missing you, wishing we would have more time together, and wishing things had ended differently. I have worked hard on remembering our good times and not what happened the day you left us. I loved you then, I love you now and I will love you to eternity… Kathy
It's been a long 10 months since you left us. I think about you every single day. Love Kathy
Happy Birthday a day late my love. I miss you. Kathy
Happy birthday Joe! I’m so glad you finally get to celebrate your birthday and Christmas back with Dixie just like all the many good old days♥️
I'm missing you especially today. Don't know why today is any different, but it is. Love...Kathy
It's been six months since you left us. The hole in my heart will never truly heal. I miss you so much. All my love...Kathy
I love and miss you so much. What I wouldn't give to look across the room to see you in your chair watching TV and ask how you are doing. What I wouldn't give to cook you another meal. What I wouldn't give to hook/unhook you from dialysis one more time. I thank God for bringing us back together and to allow us to have the time we had together. No regrets, just gratefulness and love. Kathy
Deepest sympathy to all of Joe’s family! So sorry for your loss! He was the nicest man you’d ever want to meet! He was such a good neighbor to my daughter Nichole and her husband Ben! He loved the two little red heads, Nora and Chloe who moved away in 2021! RIP Joe until we meet again!😢🙏🏻
Thinking of you today. We'll miss Joe's presence next door.
Our thoughts and prayers are with your family. I will miss seeing Joseph in the neighborhood. He would always have a smile and a greeting when we would meet on our walks. Such a kind man. He will be missed on Schubert Street.
I'm so sorry, Billie Jo and family. Know I'm thinking of you all and sending love.

You will be missed. You were definitely one of the best.
I played pool with Joe at the corner pocket for a long time. He was the kindest person around, always looked forward to talking with him. I know the rest of the Corner Pocket family felt the same. Everyone there had a tremendous amount of respect for him as a man, and for his pool game. He was quite a shark!

Emily and Justin, I am so sorry for the loss of your father. You're right, he was a little weird, but in a very delightful way, and I so enjoyed our conversations at family reunions. Although I will not be able to attend the services, please know I am sending heartfelt sympathy and strength to you both. Love, Jim Kern
So sorry for your loss Emily and Family. My thoughts and condolences are with you. Dave Lingren.
