Paul W. Mumm, 87, of Ames, Iowa passed away peacefully on May 31, 2023. Paul was born on July 19, 1935, in Ames to Carl and Thelma Mumm. He graduated from Ames High in 1953. Paul enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he was a sharpshooter and paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne, and was honorably discharged in 1957.

He married Mary Lou Meyer on August 20, 1961. Paul operated a Skelly service station in Campustown before buying three Iowa Casey's stores until he retired to enjoy life as a full-time sportsman.

Paul was an avid outdoorsman who especially loved hunting and fishing.

He loved watching a good western, especially John Wayne, and was a fan of both the Cyclones and Hawkeyes. Paul never played favorites.

Paul's quiet strength, integrity, humility, and honest way of living were just a few of the sterling qualities that made him a wonderful husband, father, and friend. He generously shared his love of the outdoors with all and, if you were lucky enough, his favorite fishing holes.

Paul is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Lou; daughters Michelle Gideon Gulseth (Lance) of Phoenix, AZ, and Deb Hill (Mike) of Trout Lake, WA; grandchildren Luke (Wendy), Mackenzie, Tucker, and Eli.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Dick and Jerry.

In lieu of flowers, please honor Paul by continuing his love and responsible stewardship of the land and the humans and animals who populate it.

I enjoyed the many conversation with Paul while we were neighbors at NRV. He had a tremendous amount of knowledge about the outdoors and trapshooting. My Condolences.

Mary Lou, Michelle, Deb,
Did I accidntly send part of this message already??? Maybr you need some smiles at this time. I was so sad to learn of Paul's death! He was a good and kind man! And though your Mom is a strong woman and will manage, Paul was that calming stable presence in her life. And together they have raised two pretty fantastic daughters. It was a blessing that both of you got to recently spend some time with you parents. I"m sure you have many fond memories to comfort you in the months ahead when you think of Paul. I apologize for not being at the visitation but Dick"s high school class is celebrating its 70th reunion1 And I'm not 100% comfortable with him driving alone to IA. City after just completing radiation tx. Again our sympathy to you all. Karen & Dick R0ss

Good bye my friend and hero, I learned so much from you. You taught me so much about nature, hunting and fishing. I truly enjoyed our friendship. I loved our fishing trips together with Dick and Riz and Kenny! That was a great time! We loved hunting together at our cabin on Wall Lake. So much wisdom you shared with me about hunting and fishing and nature in general. I remember you shooting squirrels in the front yard and then having them for dinner! LOL! Thank you for everything that you passed on to me. I passed it on to my son!
I shall miss you my dearest friend!
With my love for you always!
Jeff

Meyer Family Reunion 2022

Lance Gulseth on May 31, 2023

Paul was my father-in-law. From what I could see, he was good and honest man. He loved his family. He and Mary Lou once drove 800 miles one way, just to spend time with Michelle and me and show us his old Wyoming stomping grounds.

We shared a love of nature and animals, and I enjoyed learning from him about about birds and trees and anything about critters. He had an abundance of knowledge about nature, born of experience. I remember one time he and Mary Lou came to visit our campsite at the Ledges. I think he had only been there for five minutes and I pointed out a robin. I thought he would be impressed!

Although he had only been there five minutes, he told me it was indeed a robin, and he pointed out where the robins nest was, and how many trips she had made to it in those five minutes. He had so many stories of hunting and animals - all the sort of stuff I read as a boy in Field and Stream and Sports Afield.

Luckily he passed on his love of the outdoors to his daughter, Michelle, who (like her dad) can spot a critter hiding in a bush faster than anyone I know.

Paul will be both missed and remembered often. I wish I had gotten to spend more time with him. He had a lot to teach me.

My heartfelt sympathies to your family. I did not know him.

I enjoyed your last comments about preserving the stewardship of the land.
