Stephen Bishop, 87, of Ames passed away on June 30, 2023, at the Israel Family Hospice House. Services will be held on August 11, 2023 at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care 414 Lincoln Way Ames, Iowa 50010 from 4-6:00 p.m.

Stephen was born on June 22, 1936, to John H. and Ethel (Echternach) Bishop in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In his early years his family moved until they settled in Madison, New Jersey, where Stephen graduated with the class of 1954. He attended Gettysburg College and earned a bachelor's degree in biology in 1958, he would attend Duke University and would graduate with a master's degree in Zoology. Being the fine student, he continued his education and received his PH.D. in Biology from Rice University, located in Houston, Texas, in 1964, but not before marrying the love of his life Carol Lynne McArthur. Later in life, the family relocated to Shawnee Mission Kansas, after he was hired by Kansas University in the Medical Center working in the Biochemist Dept. from 1964 until 1967. He then moved to Baylor University in the same field working from 1967 until 1978. He worked in the Marine Lab on Friday Harbor in Puget Sound, Washington on his summer break from the University. He was then employed at Iowa State University in 1978 and was employed in the Zoology dept. until his retirement in 2000. During his time at Iowa State, he worked with the Marine Biology Lab in Woods Hole Massachusetts, and was Program officer with the National Science Foundation Washington D.C.

Stephen is survived by his son, Robert Bishop, grandchildren Calvin Bishop Dobson, and Laurel Jean Bishop, and his brother John (Marcia) Bishop, his children Keith and Scott, and great nephew Alex.

Stephen is preceded in death by his wife Carol Lynn, daughter Jennifer, and son Phillip.
