Earlene Allred Smart was born to Lee and Leah Allred on May 20, 1941. She was named after her grandfather, Earl, and her grandmother, Aleen. She loved her name and it was always a source of pride for her. She grew up in Roosevelt, Utah, with her
sisters, Karen and Angela. She often bragged that she had 72 first cousins. Family was everything to Earlene.

Earlene attended Utah State University in Logan, Utah. She met Parley Dwight Smart when he asked her if she would be willing to help him out with his CPR homework.
They married on August 25, 1961, and were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. They had four children, James Lee, Pat Dwight, Suzanne and Jacquelyn.
During the early years of their marriage, Parley and Earlene were stationed at the Dugway Proving Grounds where Parley was a civilian scientific photographer. In 1973, they built a home next door to Earlene's parents in Neola, Utah. After Parley fell through some rafters at work and was laid up for over a year, Earlene went to work at Roosevelt City. She later worked at the Roosevelt Medical Clinic, and then as an independent medical transcriptionist. In her later years, Earlene moved to Ames, Iowa,
to live with Suzanne and Tyler. There she was surrounded by love and, with her increasing medical issues, provided care.

As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, she served in many callings including Cultural Relief Society Teacher, Cub Scout Leader, Stake Primary President, Gospel Doctrine Sunday School Teacher. In their later years, she and Parley served as missionaries in the Salt Lake City Family History Missionary Training Center. Earlene's hobbies included her lifelong love of family history. In 1987, she wrote a history of her great-grandfather, David Johnston, and received an award from BYU. She
was also an accomplished quilter. She gifted quilts to each of her children and grandchildren.

She instilled a love of reading in all of her kids, as well as a love of travel. She was determined to take the opportunity to have the family travel with Parley to training conferences. They would load us kids up and drive across the country with Earlene reading aloud to keep us entertained. We visited San Francisco, Atlanta, Georgia, Minneapolis, Minnesota, somewhere in Mississippi. On these same trips we travel to "Where the Red Fern Grows" and "Summer of the Monkeys" and many others. They
kept expenses down with cereal breakfast in the hotel room, and a lunch of sandwiches out of the trunk of the car. She never regretted teaching us to love travel, but every time she helped one of her kids move box after box of books, she wondered if she made a mistake teaching us to love reading.

Earlene had a caring and loving soul. When she saw someone in need, she would figure out a way to heIp. There were dozens and dozens of loaves of homemade bread delivered to widows during the holidays. Or the time when she loaned our piano to a family so the mother could earn money by providing voice and piano lessons. Of course, her children and grandchildren benefited the most from her relentless service. There were countless chats, meals, hugs, and kisses. In her last days at the care
center, there was a steady stream of staff members who came by to say goodbye and to share how much they loved and enjoyed her.

Earlene passed on January 12, 2024, at Bethany Life in Story City, Iowa from complications of dementia.
Earlene was predeceased by her father, Lee Allred; her mother, Leah Aleen Sprouse Allred; her husband, Parley Dwight Smart; her sister,
Karen Lee Allred Nielsen; and her great-grandson, Owen Huntsman.

She is survived by her children James Lee (Mary Jo) of Bountiful, Utah; Pat Dwight (Ruth) of Duluth, Georgia; Suzanne (Tyler Thacker) of Ames, Iowa; and Jacquelyn (Michael Cooley) of
Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and her sister, Angela (Gene Turner) of Murray, Utah. She loved her grandkids with her whole heart. They are: Nick, Damon, MaCall, Raquel,
Derek, Kaeley, Sarah, Ashley, Tate, Eliza, Alexis, Christopher, Catherine Hillary, Daniel and Jackson. Her great-grandchildren are Toren, Sawyr, Rafe, Madeline, Gabe,
Brooks, Quinn, Grayson, Elisabeth and Christopher.

Graveside services will be held on 15 July 2024 in Bountiful Utah. Time of services
will be updated at a future date.
