Dr. VanMeter died at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames on Sat. Jan 26, 2008. A gathering of friends will be 5-7 p.m. on Thursday Feb. 7, at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care, 414 Lincoln Way in Ames.
Dr. VanMeter was born May 4, 1933, in Lincoln, IL, the son of William and Bertha May Taylor VanMeter. He married Beverly Barr. He later married Karin C. Sikora on January 24th 1981 in Ames, IA.
He received his B. A. Liberal Arts - Biology from Knox College and earned B.S. in Pharmacy at Drake University before entering Stritch School of Medicine, Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood IL., where he received his Ph.D., Pharmacology in 1970.

Dr. VanMeter was Professor Emeritus of Pharmacology at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University. He received several citations and awards, including Mead --Johnson Under graduate research Award, Drake University, Dean's List of Academic Excellence, Drake University, Full Member of the Graduate Faculty at ISU, Cardinal Key Award for Meritorious Service, ISU. Visiting Professorships at Loyola University, University of Maryland, Drake University, Faculty Improvement at Magill University School of Medicine; Montreal P.Q., Canada .
Memberships and associations include, Society of Neurosciences, Delaware Chapter of Society of Neurosciences, American Society of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, and IPA (Intergovernmental Personnel Act twice. Dr. VanMeter has extensive publications.
Survivors include his wife, Dr. Karin VanMeter, of Ames, two daughters, Christine VanMeter (Josh Hale) of Ames, and Dr. Susan Gallagher of Denver, CO, one son, Andrew William VanMeter of Ames, two grandchildren, Anne and Kegan, two cousins, Lynn VanMeter and Kent VanMeter of Texas, and his first wife, Beverly.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Mary Greeley Foundation Israel Family Hospice House or to the VanMeter family.
